Suzette Denise Rush - James, affectionately called "Sue" or "Big Mama," gracefully transitioned on May 22, 2024, at the age of seventy-five, surrounded by her family.

She was born on October 10, 1948, to the late Charles Rush, Sr., and Thelma Beatrice Williams Rush in Charleston, WV. Suzette attended Kanawha County Public Schools and graduated from Charleston High School ('66) and West Virginia State University, ('75).
In addition to her parents, Suzette was preceded in death by her husband, William C. James; her son, Ramon Anthony "Cub" James; her siblings, Mary Goldie Kennedy, Ramona Hailey; her brothers-in-law, Gilbert James, Jr., Joseph "Jody" James, Troy Kennedy, John Hailey, Homer Davis, Percy Giles, Sonny Anderson, and Carlton Cunningham.
Suzette was a devoted mother, sister, aunt, and friend touching the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was defined by warmth, generosity, and an infectious laugh that could light up any room. Her home was a haven of hospitality, where all who entered were welcomed with open arms. Countless cookouts and gatherings were hosted within its walls, making it a gathering place for family and friends on every occasion, especially holidays.

An avid sports enthusiast, Suzette's passion for the game was particularly evident in her fervent support for the "Commanders," formerly known as the Washington Redskins. She not only cheered from the sidelines but also served as a coach and cheerleader for her sons, their families, and her grandchildren. Her unwavering support extended to attending her grandchildren's sporting events, including summers spent watching her grandson, Jeffrey, excel in AAU basketball. In her retirement years, she became an ardent supporter of William's sporting endeavors.
Professionally, Suzette dedicated several years of her life to serving the State of West Virginia before embarking on a new chapter in the DC Metro Area. There, she contributed over 28 years of loyal service to C&P Telephone Company, later retiring from Verizon in 2012. In October 2013, Suzette returned to her roots in West Virginia, settling in Winfield alongside her lifelong companion, Greg Cunningham.

Suzette's legacy is continued by her beloved family, especially her son, Jeffrey James (Annette) of Bowie, MD; her daughter-in-law, Angela James of Concord, NC; and her devoted lifelong companion, Greg Cunningham of Winfield, WV. She is also survived by her adoring grandchildren, Jeffery James II, Tiahara Brown, Tauron James, and William James, as well as her great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Ryann, Gianna, Anari, and Wrighteous. Her sisters; Zehline Davis, Patricia Giles and her brother, Charles (Deborah) Rush, Jr.; her godchildren Krista Harmon; Gregory Cunningham, Jr., and William Cunningham.

Suzette is fondly remembered by her sisters-in-law, Rebecca Anderson, Ellen (William) Wade, Pamela (Elston) Canada, Helen James, and Gloria Miller and brother-in-law, Michael James; in addition, Russell (Lynn) Cunningham, Kay Douglas, George Cunningham, Lois (Rick) Spotts, Terri Hornsby, and Brenda Cunningham. Suzette leaves to mourn her loss, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Suzette will be forever treasured and remembered for her boundless love, infectious spirit, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. May her laughter continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Suzette's spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends, serving as a source of inspiration and comfort in the days ahead. Though she may no longer walk among us, her love will forever guide us, and her memory will forever be a blessing.
