Thelma Walker Doss, 94, of Dunbar, formerly of St. Albans, died of pneumonia on Wednesday, April 2, in the arms of her daughter, Ruth, surrounded by her family.
She was a retired teacher, having taught at Van High School, Van Grade School, Madison Grade School and Lakewood Elementary School. Thelma graduated from Marshall College in 1937. Prior to her death she was the oldest living graduate of the Van High School class of 1933, where she served as Salutatorian. She was a past president of the Madison Woman's Club and was a charter member and first president of Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, teachers' sorority. She also later served as president of Tau Chapter. Thelma was also a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Albans.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer E. Doss.
Outliving most of her friends and large family, she is survived by one brother, Parnell Walker of Moneta, Va., and three children and their spouses, Mary Frances and Richard Starcher of South Charleston, Tom and Joan Doss of Winston-Salem, NC and Ruth and Richard Miller of Dunbar, with whom she resided for the last decade. Thelma had one grandchild, Maggie Starcher of South Charleston and four step-grandchildren, Lora Denney of Culloden, Sherry McMillian of Leon, Lauren Schweppe of Davidson, NC and Carl Schweppe of Winston-Salem. She leaves eight surviving nieces and eight nephews. There are five step-great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 5, at Madison Memory Gardens with Thelma's grandnephew, the Rev. Thomas K. Price officiating.
