Thelma Louise Elkins, 92, of Dunbar passed away on August 29, 2014.
Thelma graduated from Sherman High School in 1940. After graduation, she served as "Rosie the Riveter" in Baltimore, MD. She was later married in St. Augustine, FL to Baxter Elkins in 1943. Thelma was on the first Boone County Jury which allowed women to serve. She was a Teacher's Aide at the Florida School for the Deaf in St. Augustine and retired from the University of Charleston's Records Department. Thelma was a Christian and a longtime member of Dunbar Mountain Mission Church and the Ladies' Bible Study Group.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Baxter; parents, Everette and Grace Carr; two brothers; and three sisters.
Thelma is survived by her daughter, Donna Whittington of Dunbar; special friend, Joe Lipscomb; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends, neighbors, and church family.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 1, at Dunbar Mountain Mission.
A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, at Dunbar Mountain Mission with Rev. Ron Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Ferrel Cemetery, Comfort, Boone County.
