Vallie A. Mitchell, affectionately known as "Aunt Bob", 92, of Dunbar passed away quietly at home Sunday, January 4, 2015.
She was born March 1, 1922 in Hernshaw then moved to Marmet as a young child. She was the middle daughter of the late Perry and Ada Snodgrass.
Vallie was a graduate of East Bank High School and attended Starcher Baptist Church in Charleston. She worked for Cohen's Drug Store on the west side of Charleston for many years before they became Rite Aid. She then went to work at the Diamond Department Store as an Estee Lauder Beauty Consultant until they closed in 1983. She then went to work at Stone & Thomas Department Store retiring at the age of 78. Vallie was an avid gardener. She had a green thumb and could make anything grow. She was very creative and took great pride in her home.
Vallie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Elliott Mitchell; brother, Rauser (Alma) Snodgrass: sisters, Gertrude (Carl) Ward, Rhoda (Damon) Asbury, Lynn Scaggs; and her great niece Lorrie Burger Fenn.
She is survived by nieces she helped raise, Collette Gray of Dunbar and Nannette (Donald) Burger of Dunbar. She is also survived by many more nieces and nephews.
Vallie had a very positive and happy personality and was loved by so many. She will be greatly missed.
The family would like to extend deep gratitude and thank you to her caretakers of many years, Robin Runnion, Carol Rogers and Tammy Palmer. The family would also like to thank Dr. John Lilly and Teresa at Dunbar Medical for their compassionate care and Hospice for their help and support the last few months.
A celebration of Vallie's life will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, January 7 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with Reverend Doyle D. Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Family and friends may call two hours prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
