Vaneta Jewell Smith, 98, of Dunbar died on February 25, 2018 of natural causes.

She was the daughter of the late Pearl W. and Agnes Arbaugh and was born in Putnam County on October 6, 1919. She and her husband, Forrest lived in Dunbar for 63 years, where they made a home for their two daughters. She was a strong, faithful Christian and active member of the Dunbar Church of Christ for over 60 years and previously of the Laywell Church of Christ.

She was a master seamstress and was employed at several area dress shops in Charleston, including Polan's, The Vogue, Betty's, and at Stone & Thomas for 11 years prior to retirement in 1997. She then continued alteration work for many clients, friends and family for several years. Her last sewing project at age 97 provided stuffed animals for children and elderly while in the hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest J. Smith; her daughter Charolette Farris of Cross Lanes; her parents; her brothers Hobert, Freddie and Layman, all of Hurricane; and sister Alberta Honaker, of Huntington.

Surviving are her daughter, Joy Harmon and husband Henry Harmon of Hurricane; and grandchildren, Michael Harmon of Hurricane, Emily Harmon of Grove City, OH, and Matthew Harmon and his wife Ashley of Charleston, Beckey Farris of Waxhaw, NC, Deanna Woodyard and her husband Josh, of Ashworth, VA, and three great-grandchildren Mason Farris, and Aidan and Bianca Woodyard.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with Minister Donnie Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park.
