Obituary

Virginia B. Coleman Edwards was born on December 28, 1920 to Clifford Brown and Willie M. Pearis Brown in London, West Virginia. Her home going was on November 9, 2010.

She was predeceased by her first husband Theester "Sippie" Coleman in 1954 and by her second husband of over 30 years Ernest E. Edwards in 2003. She was also predeceased by her sons: Theester C. "T.C." Coleman and Charles R. Coleman.

She lived the majority of her life in West Virginia where she graduated from West Virginia State College with a B.S. in Education with an English major in 1941. She left West Virginia only to attend school where she received her Masters Degree in Secondary Education from Ohio State University in 1950 and her Ph.D from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973. She also worked toward certification in public school speech correction at Columbia University and at Marshall University. Dr. Edwards served as speech correctionist for Kanawha County Public Schools from 1950-1965. She began teaching English full–time at West Virginia State College in 1965. She remained there until her retirement in 1986.

She was active in many professional organizations including being a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Links, Incorporated, an organization dedicated "to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry."

As her health declined, she had to leave her home in West Virginia. She lived with her son T.C. in New Jersey, and after his death in 2006, her daughter, Janet in Nevada.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet C. Shelton of Las Vegas, Nevada and her sisters, Mrs. Norma B. Christian of Wexford, Pennsylvania and Freda Brown of North Carolina as well as her grandchildren: Edith A. Hall and Carol A. Shelton of Las Vegas, Nevada, Frederick D. Shelton III of Denver, Colorado, Christopher Coleman of Robert, Louisiana, David Coleman of New Jersey, Lisa Palmer of Ohio, and Penny Gursky of Pennsylvania. She is also survived by 14 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren and many other family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, November 20 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. There will be a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
