Obituary

Virginia Phillips, 81 of Hurricane, formerly of South Charleston died September 10, 2010 following a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Hubert and Faye Grimm Hoffman.

She was a 1947 graduate of South Charleston High School and the Kanawha Valley Hospital School of Nursing. A homemaker most of her life, she was also employed as a nurse with the Putnam County Health Department, Union Carbide Corporation, Institute Plant, and served as head surgical nurse at Thomas Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church.

Proceeding her in death was her husband of 45 years Glenn H. Phillips, Sr., and her siblings and their spouses, Ellen and Edwin Lewis; Hubert, Jr. and Barbara Hoffman; Patricia Hoffman; and brother-in-law Versil Summers.

She is survived by her son Glenn Phillips, Jr. and his wife Shirley of Charleston; daughter, Deborah Phillips and her husband Philip Weikle of Scott Depot; her sister Helen Summers of Luling, La; Grandchildren, Adam, Beth, Emily and Elizabeth Phillips; Patrick and Chris Weikle. Sisters-in-law Dinah Adkins, Sonja Hill and Becky Phillips as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Called "Ginny" by many friends and family, she possessed an independent spirit that kept her safe throughout her life. Ginny was the only sibling of her generation to receive an advanced education. She kept a clean home and always had her sweeper in sight. Carrying herself with dignity and grace, she seldom asked for help or complained about her personal illness. A caregiver to her husband, mother and a mother-in-law as well as other family members she moved naturally into her nursing role when needed by her family. She loved children and animals and was also a gardener and bird watcher taking care of her humming birds and flower gardens each spring.

A visitation with family and friends will be held at Teays Valley Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, September 14, from 5 to 7 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, Wednesday, September 15, at 1 p.m. with interment at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens. Reverend Janet Jenkins and Reverend Doug Jenkins will officiate.

Her family wishes to express its appreciation to Tom Barron, her church Shepherd and the caregivers at Charleston Gardens and Hubbard House.
