Obituary

Vondal Maurice Taylor, age 84, of Charleston, passed from this earthly realm on January 2, 2018 at Hubbard Hospice House after a prolonged illness.

He was born in Ingram Branch, West Virginia on November 23, 1933 to William and Lenore (White) Taylor. After graduating from Simmons High School, Vondal began working at Plastic Sales Corporation in North Charleston, where he retired after 54 years of employment. He was a deacon and long-term member at the Riverview Baptist Church in Charleston, worked on the Simmons High School Reunion Committee, functioned as President of the Mount Olivet Music Association for many years, sang with the Martin Luther King Jr. Male Gospel Choir, and was an active member in the West Virginia Baptist Music Association for numerous years. The Mount Olivet Music Association was recently renamed the Vondal Taylor Music Association in his honor.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Shirley Mae (Nowling); his children, Vivian Taylor-Ayoub, Sean, and Jarl; brothers, Emory "Mick" and Wendell; sister, Margaret Frances Henderson; grandchildren, KaVonya Taylor-Durant and husband LeBarron Sr., Abdullah Ayoub and wife Hiba, Marcus, Cayla, Ava, and Jordan; great-grandchildren, Stazia Turner-Durant, LeBarron Durant Jr., Omar Ayoub, Hasan Ayoub, Tala Ayoub, and Tulin Ayoub; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William Jr.; sisters, Carleen and Linda Taylor, Martha Lawrence, and Beatrice Brisco; and his eldest son, Vondal Maurice Taylor Jr.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at Dunbar United Methodist Church, 1401 Myers Avenue, Dunbar. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.

Burial will be on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
