Willa Jean
Casto Carrier Moran
June 23, 1928 – November 22, 2024
WILLA JEAN CASTO CARRIER MORAN, 96, of Scott Depot, WV took her last breaths peacefully at Hubbard Hospice House on November 22, 2024 after a brief battle with dementia.
Bill, as Willa was later nicknamed, was born to Okey Sherman Casto and Dora Alice Pickens Casto on June 23, 1928 in Buffalo, WV where she lived during most of her childhood.
In her preteens, Bill's family moved to Dunbar where she attended middle school and Union District High School (now known as Dunbar High School) from which she graduated in 1946. Shortly after graduation, Bill began her new life when she married Tom Carrier, from Nitro, WV. She soon also obtained her first "real job" at C&P Telephone Company (later known as Bell Atlantic) from which she ultimately retired with 30+ years of service. In her late life and long after her marriage ended, Bill married Ray Moran, also a UDHS graduate. She moved from her 50+ year Dunbar residency to Florida where Ray was rooted.
Having three daughters who were active in extracurricular school activities kept Bill busy during their school years. She proudly served in several capacities…PTA president, Girl Scout Leader, school play seamstress, sports team mom, band club parent, etc. Bill seemed to always be involved in sewing, crafting, yard sales, Telephone Pioneers, school reunions, family pets, puzzles, church projects, and luncheons. When grandchildren and great grandchildren came along, she turned her focus toward them.
The youngest of eight siblings, Bill was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur B. Casto and Herbert Ray Carter Casto; and by five sisters, Mary Casto Melton (Stanley), Louise Casto Selbe (Raymond), Hilda Casto Hess (Ray), Ava Casto Tucker (Claude), and Phyllis Casto Beller (Boyd).
Bill is survived by her three daughters, Carolyn Sue Carrier Duttine of Scott Depot, Connie Carrier Unrue of Selma, NC and Christi Ann Carrier of St. Albans. Also surviving are Bill's four grandchildren, Tom Granger (Karla), Mike Granger (Kasandra), Kira Unrue Lockwood (Andrew) all of NC, and Chris Carrier of St. Albans. In addition, "Granny" leaves behind six great grandchildren, Michael, Cavory, Linkon, Nahima, Caydriel, and Casto.
The family would like to extend its appreciation and thanks to Braley Care Homes and Hubbard Hospice House for the respect and loving care shown to Bill during the last six weeks of her earthly life. Thanks and appreciation are also extended to St. John United Methodist Church for the support provided to the family.
