Obituary

William Mark Maxwell, 59, known to most as Mark or Max, of Dunbar, WV, passed away surrounded by his loving family on December 20, 2025, from an acute episode of his chronic Crohn's disease.

Born in Charleston, WV, he was the son of Charles "Bill" Maxwell and the late Dianna Maxwell.

Mark was a lifelong resident of Dunbar and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1985.  He was a member of the last AA State Championship Basketball team at Dunbar High School.  He attended WV State College and was employed by Harvey Shreve/Moses Ford and Lester Raines Imports as a salesman and manager. In 2005, he obtained his WV Real Estate license and worked at United Realty in Dunbar, with his mother and Bill Russell. He eventually obtained his WV Broker's License and became the owner of United Realty. He loved helping customers find their dream home.

Mark enjoyed sports, particularly football, basketball, and girls' volleyball.  He loved his children beyond words and was extremely proud of Thomas and Hailey and all their accomplishments.  His favorite past time was going fishing at Canaan Valley and Wine Cellar Lake as well as watching his beloved WVU Mountaineers and The Dallas Cowboys. Mark didn't know a stranger but his family and friends held a very special place in his heart.

Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Dianna Kay Maxwell, sister, Kristi Maxwell  Sampson, grandparents, Boone and Hilda Maxwell and James Lewis White and Ona Elizabeth Gandee, and several special aunts and uncles, niece and cousins.

Mark is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 26 years, Heather Elliott Maxwell (whom he called Queen or Mother); sons, Robert Farmer (grandson Jaxson) and Thomas Maxwell "Big T"; daughter, Hailey Maxwell "Haybird"; father, Bill Maxwell; brother, Scott Maxwell (Leigh Ann); his special baby girl cat, Frankie; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, as well as many lifelong friends .

We, the family, would like to express our deepest gratitude for everyone's kindness, support and sympathy during this most difficult time.  We would like to extend a very special "Thank You" to all the staff at CAMC Memorial, especially SICU/Critical Care/Surgery and 6Front A Pod, that took care of him the last month of his life. Also, we thank Cleveland Clinic Digestive Disease Institute for their advanced treatment for Mark along with Charleston Gastroenterology, Sarah Fletcher, and Dr. Durden.
