Obituary

William L. Pile, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024.  He was born on September 22, 1944 in Charleston, WV to William L. Pile, Sr. and Aldena Mae (Ballard) Pile.  He spent most of his life in Dunbar, WV and was a 1962 graduate of Dunbar High School in Dunbar, WV.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, William L. Pile, Jr.; mother, Aldena Mae Pile; and sister, Jenny Lynn Pile.

Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Sandra Jane (Cawthon) Pile; children, William L. Pile, III, Teresa Jane Justice (Gary), Theodore Marshall Pile (Dorothy), Andrew Richard Pile (Ana); grandchildren, Brittnee Steele (Brett), Landon Pile, Taylor Pile, Elizabeth Pile, Marshall Pile, Jackson Pile, and Kaitlyn Pile; great-grandchildren, Braylee Steele and Brooklyn Steele; along with many nieces, nephews and extended family.

For all who knew Bill, you know he never met a stranger.  His quick wit and infectious charm would bring a smile to all.  He loved the opportunity to serve his community, especially the youth through youth sports.  He took the responsibility of serving the community to heart.  To know Bill was to love him.  He was a man who loved his family and lit up the room with his humor.

Bill was a very active member of St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Charleston, WV serving in many capacities including Junior and Senior Warden.  Bill is remembered fondly by many in the Dunbar and Institute communities as their coach in little league, minor league, and big league baseball, youth football, biddy basketball, and as a Boy Scout leader in Williamstown, WV.

Bill was the owner of Pile Hardware on the West Side of Charleston, and a founding member of Kanawha Valley Distributors.  Through Pile Hardware, Bill sponsored countless youth sports teams in the Kanawha Valley.  In 2012, he received the Golden Hammer award for over 50 years of dedication to the Hardware Industry.

Bill enjoyed volunteering at the Dunbar-Institute Samaritan Center.  He was a Shriner, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Royal Order of Jesters, a member of the Elks, a member of Eastern Star, a member of the West Side Neighborhood Association, served as the chairman of the West Side Streetscape, and Chairman of the Economic Development Committee of Dunbar.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be greatly blessed by your contributions to the Dunbar-Institute Samaritan Center (Food Bank) in Dunbar; to the Charleston Mountain Mission; or to the St. Christopher Episcopal Church Memorial Fund in Charleston.
